Margarine (buttery spread)

I was raised on Shedd’s Spread instead of butter and now in my adult life I’m learning that the additives in most butter alternatives are a lot worse than the saturated fats that normal dairy butter contains.

Last month I bought Smart Balance Buttery Spread with Flaxseed Oil and although it’s more versatile than regular butter and I think I prefer its taste, some of the additives are not to be ignored. One is Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) which is on the FDA’s toxicity watchlist.

More about the different types of fats

As a footnote, trans fats are to be avoided AT ALL COSTS. These fats are a byproduct of hydrogenation, a process that includes exposing ingredients to heat and metal, which doesn’t seem healthy or natural at all.

BUTTER made from GRASS FED cows is BEST. My choice these days is Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter.
