“Last week we were riding in Antwerp & noticed this abandoned boat in the harbor. So one week later we went back to the boat with all the equipment that I needed. We row to the boat in a little rowboat with two pieces of wood as paddles. When the flash was set up on the boat I took a couple of test shots before the final result. I’m really stoked on how this photo came out !

“So Ben Towle & Myself were out filming a couple of street clips around 11pm the night before this photo, he was sending up a few hop whips flat ground and I shot a few but they had horrible lighting and the location was poor (Scunthorpe) so we got talking about perfect locations to shoot a photo and we both thought about the Humber Bridge. It’s only a 20 minute drive from where we live so that is pretty convenient. We figured the best time of day to shoot the photo would be really early in the morning so natural lighting was good enough but the roads weren’t too busy. After we pictured what we wanted it to look like we just thought we may as well just go do it in 5 hours’ time at 4am when the sun rises. We headed down, I got various different photos but the main one we pictured came out perfectly, so yeah not much else to it. I must give Ben credit for sending about 50 hop whips so I could get the perfect photo haha.

Jay Dalton in Poughkeepsie, New York by Zach Honahan
“While sitting down on my computer editing wedding images, I received a spontaneous phone call from my good friend Jay Dalton who was in the area,who just left doing a Ramp show performance in a elementary school. I quickly grab my light stands and camera bag, rushing out of my front door toward my car. I drove an hour to Poughkeepsie, New York where I would soon meet Jay and two other homies. An hour later, I arrive at Waryas skatepark seeing Jay and his two other friends looking quite winded from the session. I approached Jay asking to shoot a boosted T-Bog air and hopefully angle it enough where I could get him in the sky. For the photo, I used an Alienbee B800 sitting on a 10ft light stand, at around 8 1/2 foot tall. The Alienbee was angled toward Jay at around a 10-20 degree angle. The Alienbee was fired at full power, to the left of the frame, around 12-13 feet away from Jay. As far as a secondary light, there was a Nikon SB910 shooting at 1/16th as just a little filler toward the back of the frame sitting on another light stand.”

“That day me and the Stinkpit dudes heard about a couple spots up in northeast philadelphia, about a 45 min drive from where we are. The day started off pretty awesome, everyone got a photo/clip at the first spot we went to. After the first school we set out to look for another spot we had heard about and stumbled upon this school, as soon as we saw this set up we knew it was the perfect set up for Gann. i set up my gear, i decided to go with a 3 flash set up, 2 doubled up to my right on one stand and one by itself to my left against the wall. ofcourse after i set up and choose my angle, my friend nick wants to get right in closeto film with the fisheye, normally i don’t care too much but this time i wanted this photo to be perfect so i asked him to find another angle, and he did, he still managed to be in the shot but i decided i can deal with where he is because you can only see his legs, so we got started. Gann took one ran up and then banged it out, but in typical Gann fashion he was not happy with the way he did it(perfect) but that worked for me since the sun was bright and my panning was terrible. i moved the flashes in tighter, he went again and boom we got a photo we were both really happy with, then we ended the day with a few beers and some mexican food. Gann is the best dude to shoot with because he really cares about the photo, he will give me all the time i need till i feel comfortable taking the shot.

“I had been wanting to shoot something with Regan for some time. After a few failed attempts to shoot together, due mostly to my family/work schedule I made plans to meet with him at a ditch I had seen him post on his Instagram. This thing is not easy to ride at all, but its home turf for Regan plus it defiantly helps that the dude can shred. After several failed angles and waiting on the sun to get lower than f16 I finally found the angle I wanted and here is one of the few fun shots we got that day. Hope you enjoy!!

“I first met Vance Trevino maybe about 2 years ago while on a trip to Tucson AZ, he and his cousin Andy “floyd” Erickson most definitely do there part to keep BMX raw in Tucson. Case in point, we actually went to this school cause Vance wanted to a just 360 the stair set which lies and the bottom of the rail/ledge. A few minutes after getting the clip on set, he told Andy “i wanna 60/40 the rail” and asked if id like to shoot it, i gave him a “hell yeah”, after a few tries he rolled away with a smile on his face. By the way he also did a hard 180 out to. And a “STILL” is better than sequence any day for me. KRIMZEN !!!!!!” – Derrick

When I saw this photo pop up in the Flickr group I knew instantly that it was going to be my pick for photo of the week. How could it not? Everything from lighting and composition to the riding and spot are so perfect. I’ve been pretty active with the Push It A Stop Flickr lately and have been noticing a lot of photographers work level increasing rapidly which had me thinking damn, I haven’t done a photo of the week in a long time. From now on check back here every friday to see who took the top spot. I guess you could say “first up” is Nick Wotton with this downside whip of Ant Richards. “It was my day off college and my flash stands had just arrived that morning so i was keen to go out and shoot a photo, I met up with some lads from my town and we cruised over to the seafront to meet up with the rest of the crew.
We ended up coming across these black wedges which are pontoons for the harbour, straight away Ants all over them busting out tricks before i could even set up, luckily he was patient enough to let me set up for this whip photo as he is a nightmare at times for sending ridiculous stuff without telling anyone what he’s doing.
Ant is one of the best riders in my area sending pro level stuff with no fuss all day long, But he is fully underground and thats the way he likes it, We waited for the sun to set and then i set up, one canon speed light 540exii fired by pocket wizard flex tt5 to the far left giving him some back light and then the same set up to my right lighting the pontoon and Ants bike, I used a Canon 5d mrkii with a 50mm 1.8 and the mini tt1 to trigger.” – Nick Wotton

“Sometimes all you need is a little bit of luck when it comes to photography. Usually you try to plan everything out to the last detail, but sometimes things go a little haywire and you scramble at the last second to pull it all together. That situation is exactly what happened when capturing this image of Matt Lough doing a ledge ride to drop in Joliet, IL while filming for his latest edit.
Matt and Anthony Loconte, hit me up when they were going to head out for a evening of filming about 35 minutes outside of Chicago; they had said there was a set up Matt wanted to hit up around golden hour. So, I had braved rush hour traffic and headed out to Joliet to meet up with them and we kind of just cruised around and played on some nibble spots while we waited for the light to be just right. Once we were ready we headed over the the set up, which was a pretty tight ledge ride to drop that went right into a busy street and down hill. So, we tried to figure out the angles for the video and where I can get a clear photo of everything and still be out of the way of the second video angle. I settled on a head on shot, since it flattened things out and I just liked the clean look of everything as well as the side lighting coming through from the sunset. The street where Matt would land into had tons of traffic and we had to wait for the right moment where the traffic lights synced up and he could get a go at it. I knew it would most likely be a one and done situation and I had to be ready. Myself and our friend Pat Richert were on traffic duty keeping an eye on everything and all of a sudden I glance up and Matt was heading down the ledge. I guess Pat had yelled and gave the OK to go and I hadn’t realized it, while still looking at traffic. So I pulled my camera up to my eye and tried to get everything composed and lined up to where I had wanted to have him on the ledge although he was already getting to the bottom of it and I just got to fire 2 quick shots. Magically on the second shot he was coming off the ledge and the brief second where his elongated shadow synced up with the overpass tunnel was captured. I had originally wanted Matt a bit further up on the ledge, and I was super upset at myself for practically missing the shot I wanted, which I wouldn’t get a second go at. Afterwards, some of the crew really digging the shadow image I kind of started to appreciate it more and more. It was all pretty serendipitous and there was something rewarding about scrambling and getting something probably a little better than what I had originally planned.

The photo this week comes from a set of pipes in the ceiling at Ray’s Skatepark where Thriller BMX‘s Sponge finds a snug toothpick stall.
“The idea for this photo originally came during filming for the odd couple video contest. Hollywood told Sponge and I about an idea he had given to one of the other dudes on another team and we kinda left it at that. Then this past Sunday we noticed the setup while riding and talked about how it really didn’t look like it would be too bad to get done. I don’t have two front pegs so this one was all Sponge’s.
Shooting the photo was pretty fun too. I had to stand against a wall on the deck of a quarter that was only about 6 inches, then hang onto some nails that we’re sticking out of a board bolted to the wall. My girlfriend Victoria held the flash for me and I snapped a couple test shots as Sponge attempted the trick. We moved around a bit until I was satisfied with the angle and lighting. The second to last photo was good enough but he hadn’t pulled the trick yet so I tried another angle on the next attempt and it turned out to be a winner. He pulled the trick and the photo came out perfectly. I don’t normally like to shoot photos where you can’t fully see the riders face but this was one of those occasions where the angle to see his face wouldn’t have done any justice to how awesome the trick and setup really are.
